From the moment she uttered the brave and honest words, "I am an alcoholic," to interviewer George Stephanopoulos, Elizabeth Vargas began writing her story, as her experiences were still raw. Now, in BETWEEN BREATHS, Vargas discusses her accounts of growing up with anxiety-which began suddenly at the age of six when her father served in Vietnam-and how she dealt with this anxiety as she came of age, to her eventually turning to alcohol for relief. She tells of how she found herself living in denial, about the extent of her addiction and keeping her dependency a secret for so long. She addresses her time in rehab, her first year of sobriety, and the guilt she felt as a working mother who had never found the right balance. Honest and hopeful, BETWEEN BREATHS is an inspiring read.

"Elizabeth Vargas has stared straight into the lethal heart of addiction with the eye of a fearless journalist. She has written a book for us all about truth, bravery, and the hope that a new day brings." - Diane Sawyer

An amazing raw and honest memoir of a journey and itโ€™s struggles so many of us know well. As a recovering alcoholic I could relate as I hung on to every word written. Thank you for your courage to share some of your most darkest hours and also the beauty that awaits us as we continue the climb to the top of that mountain.

Elizabeth's journey to sobriety was heartfelt. She was painfully honest with her story. This is an excellent memoir; her struggle to combat this disease is admirable. To have such a high profile and know the world will share her story only proves how strong she really is....truly a great read.

  • What's your real story?

    By The depths of addiction
Yes, thank you Elizabeth. That was a grand show of your career, our media, (we were there too btw) and your oh so slight "slips". What do you know? What do you not know? You're introduction is almost embarrassing; a cop out to defend just this kind of criticism. I suspect you know something more that is not here. You're career and ego is more grand for for mystery, I suppose. Could be a good story. Except there is none. Maybe written for your fans or....your family, your boys? Nothing wrong with the validity of this story line, if there was one. Be it addiction, career, anything really. No story here, not really.
