The highly-acclaimed first novel in the Revelation Space universe—a debut that has redefined the space opera with a staggering journey across vast gulfs of time and space to confront the very nature of reality itself...

“[A] TOUR DE FORCE…RAVISHINGLY INVENTIVE.”—Publishers Weekly

Nine hundred thousand years ago, something annihilated the Amarantin civilization just as it was on the verge of discovering space flight. Now one scientist, Dan Sylveste, will stop at nothing to solve the Amarantin riddle before ancient history repeats itself. With no other resources at his disposal, Sylveste forges a dangerous alliance with the cyborg crew of the starship Nostalgia for Infinity. But as he closes in on the secret, a killer closes in on him. Because the Amarantin were destroyed for a reason—and if that reason is uncovered, the universe—and reality itself—could be irrevocably altered...

    Best scifi ever.
  • Proper Scifi

Good proper scifi in my opinion. Fun and I'd read it again. Complaint: like so many ebooks now-a-days the editing is terrible, sometimes making parts of the story very difficult to follow.
  • Magical solutions

It's a great story, with well written characters, exotic scenery, immersive technologies and so much possibility. It's unfortunate that the author has decided to use technology as a magical out in so many scenes. Characters stuck in an impossible situation? Render them unconscious then wake them up somewhere else safe and sound. Lost a bit? Add a character to provide some exposition. The long lost magical sentient thingy decided to save you by scanning your form, freezing your body, teleporting you through a star, no a black hole, into a spaceship traveling the speed of light twenty-years in the future. Problem solved.

Lovecraftian ideas exponentially developed to an awe inspiring story of multiple discoveries. And this is just the first novel that sets the scene in this spectacular world. If you're a thinker, you've arrived at the right book. By the way, this review was inspired by my second read.
  • Too many typos

The book is decent, but the number of typos makes it hard to enjoy. Was this book scanned in? Please fix this.

One of the best books I have read in some time. It takes a bit to get used to some vocabulary you may be unfamiliar with, but otherwise, I have no complaints. I will be buying another novel by this author.

This book is so engrossing and mesmerizing. Everything in it is so well thought out and put together that it seems like it all really exists somewhere in the universe. Truly genius. I highly recommend this book to any reader. I normally do not read science fiction and decided to branch out when my university library was giving away free books. I absolutely fell in love with this book and I am planning on reading the rest of his novels.

Couldn't put it down. Very well written!
  • An Excellent, Hard SF Epic

Very impressive, intelligent work. It handles an epic scope with mystery, interstellar spaceships, interesting characters, AI, elaborate plotting, and massive spectacle. All the characters are a bit coldly intelligent to the point where the artificially-intelligent ones often seem more human- there is little emotional complexity. But that is what I liked about it!
  • Brilliant book, horrible copy

Reynolds is a fantastic author. This novel sets the basis of a "universe" that he ties some of his other books & short stories into. If you like hard scifi, you wont be disappointed! That being said, this electronic copy is atrocious! There has to be a typo/spelling mistake on nearly every page, some with multiple mistakes. I had the impression that this copy was based off a scan of a real book which was then processed by an optical character recognition program. Many "rn" instances showed up as "m", etc --- it ended being pretty disruptive when trying to read. If the next book I purchase from Apple's store is like this, I'll stick with buying from the competition.
