Book one in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling humorous contemporary romance by Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

  • Should have spent more time in the cutting stage.

This book is at least 25% longer than it needs to be with way too many scenes that fail to accomplish nearly anything. There are so many scenes that don’t hit the mark for exposing or moving the plot or pacing and just seem to be there to pad the length? Other events that are actually important drag on and/or happen in the middle of major plot points and derails the tension. It was a good story, decently written, the protagonist, Josh was extremely likable but the (non)protagonist, Megan is a passive victim of the plot the entire time and does almost nothing to further the story in any meaningful way which is always frustrating but Josh and the villain basically covered the slack of that. Heck even minor characters that weren’t villains did more to further the plot. And spoilers: the antagonist seems to be the protagonist of the the second part of the trilogy. You spend so much time being given way too many reasons to hate her that I’m not sure why anyone would want to pick up the second book? I found her utterly unlikable as she seemed to be there mostly to highlight how much of a spineless, weak willed woman Megan is and her character flip at the end felt out of left field and ridiculous.

I love love stories 😜😜and this is no different. It widens your sense of imagination and leaves you dreaming in total fantasy!

I liked it because it was a quick and easy read. I felt that the story itself lacked substance but I still enjoyed reading it.
  • Predictable but Can’t put the book down!

I’m not much of a reader - I prefer to binge watch tv shows. But I started reading this book and I found myself enthralled in it. It’s got some pretty predictable outcomes and unrealistic (yet passionate) romance scenes. (But that’s fiction for ya!) Needless to say, I found myself wanting to read the book everywhere I went - this book has definitely been my guilty pleasure!

Amusing yet predictable. Could have written it all in one chapter.
  • Slow starting decent ending terrible grammar

I’m going to get straight to the point (something this book did not do) the story is original which is why I gave it 3 stars. In all the book was overly and unnecessarily detailed which made it mundane and I found myself acting as the grammar police (publisher deserves to be fired for not proofreading).

The book kept my attention, but I felt some parts dragged out a little too long.

I read the whole book in one day, it is like a hallmark movie but with a little more spice. Now on to the next one!
