A hilarious, thoughtful, and in-depth exploration of the pleasures and perils of modern romance from one of this generation’s most popular and sharpest comedic voices

At some point, every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it’s wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history. With technology, our abilities to connect with and sort through these options are staggering. So why are so many people frustrated?

Some of our problems are unique to our time. “Why did this guy just text me an emoji of a pizza?” “Should I go out with this girl even though she listed Combos as one of her favorite snack foods? Combos?!” “My girlfriend just got a message from some dude named Nathan. Who’s Nathan? Did he just send her a photo of his penis? Should I check just to be sure?”

But the transformation of our romantic lives can’t be explained by technology alone. In a short period of time, the whole culture of finding love has changed dramatically. A few decades ago, people would find a decent person who lived in their neighborhood. Their families would meet and, after deciding neither party seemed like a murderer, they would get married and soon have a kid, all by the time they were twenty-four. Today, people marry later than ever and spend years of their lives on a quest to find the perfect person, a soul mate.

For years, Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at modern romance, but for Modern Romance, the book, he decided he needed to take things to another level. He teamed up with NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg and designed a massive research project, including hundreds of interviews and focus groups conducted everywhere from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to Wichita. They analyzed behavioral data and surveys and created their own online research forum on Reddit, which drew thousands of messages. They enlisted the world’s leading social scientists, including Eli Finkel, Helen Fisher, Sheena Iyengar, Barry Schwartz, Sherry Turkle, and Robb Willer. The result is unlike any social science or humor book we’ve seen before.

In Modern Romance, Ansari combines his irreverent humor with cutting-edge social science to give us an unforgettable tour of our new romantic world.

And I knew I would. Aziz is one of the more smarter comedians in this day and age so I knew that any book written by him would not only be super funny but educational too. I learned and laughed a lot from this book and I'm sure anyone who picks it up will too.

This book is fantastic. A comedian takes a sociological perspective on today's dating scene and it could not be any more interesting. Aziz did an incredible amount of research for this project and it shows. For me, a lot of this book was very relatable and it helped me realize that I'm not the only person out there feeling and experiencing the same things. This book made me change the way I approach life and that's what a good book is supposed to do.

I have not finished reading the book, but so far it's hilarious. I can literally imagine, and hear Aziz saying all his remarks in this book. This book was not meant to give you advice in how to get a date, but to state the obvious and make fun of it. If you like Aziz then you will enjoy this book. Highly recommend.

So, recently divorced after 18 years. Online dating didn't really exist when I was single last. Seen Aziz on Comedy Central many times and love how his sense of humor carries through chapter to chapter. I wasn't expecting this to be so informed with social anthropologists, physiologists, parsed data from but that makes it all the more convincing. The book made me laugh out loud, I can honestly say that it has put me at ease with online dating. Yes, we are all in it together playing the game, is the take away. Be sincere and proof read, take the time but not too much, etc. I know that there is something revealing in this for every adult. Mr. Ansari, big thank you. I'm a cosmopolitan father, almost 50, living in a remote, chronically depressed village about 2hrs from a city. Local options are for the most part non-existent (search results "some college, slender", yield the same 16 women out to 50 miles, 1 of whom was an 8 crazy, yes I'm talking about you Elaine), so I'm dating online to START a long distance relationship with a chic lady who doesn't mind the drive. Probably the tallest of online orders. This book has helped me attract the rarest women who would consider a situation such as mine. Cheers, LOL

Hilarious and all too truthful look at the crazy world of modern dating. Home run for Aziz.

Ok , so this review matters a lot to me because I love Aziz. This book was bad, I had high hopes because I watch everything Aziz is in, but I felt he fell short on this one. The book talks about his experiences texting people, and they disappearing. Now he tries to put his regular humor in it, but I feel it doesn't work in this format. Then my main issue with the book is he partner up with psychologist and other experts to run heavy statistics to find the number of single people, people in relationships, people who hook up etc.Now this may seem interesting but it's not. Reading these statistics in a book about romantic in the modern world is truly boring. I guess he was trying something new but it just disappointed. I was extremely bored, not entertained, and forced myself to finishing reading this book. He doesn't even give advice or suggestions, everything in there about Okcupid, Tinder, is stuff that people already know. I would not recommend.
